What is a Passport?

Some countries will let passport holders of other countries get into its territory.  Like the US Visa Waiver Program, citizens of participating countries, like Canada, can come to the US without a visa for stays of 90 days or less, if all requirements are met to use this VWP.  As of 2019, unfortunately, countries like Thailand, China, India, or Korea are not participants in the VWP.  So, if you are Thai, Chinese, Indian, or Korean, you will need to get a visa before you travel to the US.  Even though you have a passport, you must get a visa before you can come to the US.

A passport is issued by your country's government.  A visa is issued by the country that you want to travel to (e.g. US).  They are not the same thing.
